А в пользу первого говорит вот что:

The F2A-2’s Wright R-1820 Cyclone radial engines often suffered damage to the master rod
bearings, particularly at high altitude. When the bearings went, the engine froze, and the
problem was occurring with such frequency that VF-3’s engineering officer, Lt. (jg) Edward H. “Butch” O’Hare (USNA 1937), decided to fit oil and temperature gauges to one of the fighters and fly to twenty thousand feet, about two-thirds of the fighter’s service altitude. Not unexpectedly, the engine froze and O’Hare had to ride the plane down and make a dead-stick landing. The test revealed improper oil seals supplied to the Bureau of Aeronautics, but still it took time to disassemble the troubled engines and make necessary repairs. And the oil leaked onto the windshield, making carrier landings, especially at night, all the more difficult.

Если финны, по Винду, разбирали машины до винтику хотя бы в целях обучения, они могли это устранить по ходу без героизма, просто в рабочем порядке.
