On 8 November ILLUSTRIOUS stood out from Alexandria along with its fellow-warships, whose brief was to support the safe transit of Malta-bound convoy MB8. On board the carrier were a Section of Sea Gladiators from EAGLE, and it was two of these fighters that achieved the first 'kill' in the course of this latest operation. Sub-Lts. Sewell and Nicolls switched over from their Fulmars to engage and dispatch a Cant Z501 'shadower'. Next day, Sub-Lt. Orr - a future 'Ace' along with Sewell - closed in on another Cant Z501 and brought it down. Then, with the convoy safely in port, ILLUSTRIOUS was positioned for Taranto. During the 10th, yet another 'shadowing' Cant Z501 felt the fatal impact of Fulmar machine guns, fired by Lts. Sewell and Barnes. A similar thorough effort to 'cleanse' the air around the Fleet of all 'shadowers' continued over the vital twenty-four hours surrounding the launch and recovery of the attacking Swordfish. In this time, four separate enemy aircraft were either driven off or downed, of which two were later listed in Italian records as lost.
