"Vernet had received a concession of land on East Falkland as early as 1823 for fishing
and grazing rights and since then had been working hard to establish a settlement. The
population was between 120 and 200, engaged in the production of cow hides, meat and
seal skins. It was at this time that wool began to be exported to London."
