Nissan is getting very, very serious about quality control. So serious, in fact, that the automaker is aiming to reduce quality complaints by half by 2012, and to do it, it’s hiring a ton of new quality-control engineers and inspectors.
The plan is to increase quality-control training for all its workers, as well as hire 4000 new engineers to work with suppliers on quality issues, for a total of 5000. Additionally, Nissan will add 4050 new engineers certified as quality inspectors to its current staff of 250. All this is meant to catch problems earlier, and 10 new directors will be the quality-control heads responsible for any problems with product quality. The biggest issues will be the number of customer complaints during the first three months of a new model’s release, the need for repairs and the ratio of defective parts.
