The overall assessment led to the decision to commit Panzer Regiment 25 to the motorway and the railroad line Minsk-Moscow on 26 June (see Figure 90). The regiment was reinforced by an armored infantry battalion. 3rd Battalion of Panzer Regiment 25 was ordered to spearhead the regiment's advance in its attempt to gain the forest east of Smolewiecze and to secure the northern and southern regions there. 3rd Battalion reached the motorway north of Slopoda at about 1700. It made no contact with the enemy but encountered frequent air attacks. The battalion's next step was to seize Smolewiecze, 20 km northeast of Minsk, at nightfall Here the unit met only minor resistance on the part of snipers. Just south of the motorway, I myself stopped a freight train with supplies from Minsk by firing at it with my tank gun. The remaining four tanks of another company of the battalion had to engage a tank transport train which came from the east and stopped one kilometer west of the small railroad station of Plissa.
At sunrise on 27 June the tank transport train discovered these four tanks and combat ensued in the course of which the company commander's tank was destroyed. However, another supporting panzer company consisting of six tanks and several antitank guns managed to silence the Russian train. In the course of this battle the regimental commander, Colonel Rothenburg, was seriously injured by a shell fragment. The joy at our great success was damped by the fact that this much revered commander was killed by snipers on the way back through the rear area.
The northern part of the ring around Minsk was then closed (see Figure 91). XXXIX Corps, and especially 7th Panzer Division, had fulfilled their tasks. At that time, Panzer Regiment 25 had only about 50 per cent of its Type II and 38T tanks left, and a mere 25 of its Type IV tanks. Therefore, a panzer battalion was deactivated temporarily.
